China Steel Association: the steel industry will face greater difficulties in the second half of the year

Zhu Jimin, president of China Iron and Steel Association and chairman of Shougang Group, said on July 29 that the domestic steel industry will face greater difficulties in the second half of this year.   Zhu Jimin made the above remarks at the second executive director (expansion) meeting of the 4th China Steel Association. He pointed out that in addition to the significant increase in demand for construction steel in the second half of the year, the market for sheet and strip for production will not improve; therefore, the growth rate of steel production in the second half of the year will likely slow down. Zhu Jimin further explained that due to the large-scale construction of affordable housing in the second half of the year and the implementation of the spirit of the Central Water Conservancy Work Conference, large-scale water conservancy projects will be carried out one after another, and the steel market for construction will be more vigorous; and shipbuilding, automobiles, construction machinery, etc. The growth will slow down, the structural contradictions of products will become more prominent, and the overcapacity of sheet and strip and the homogenization competition of products will become more intense. Statistics from the China Iron and Steel Association show that in the first half of this year, the country's crude steel output was 350 million tons, an increase of 9.6% year-on-year. According to this calculation, the annual crude steel output will reach 706 million tons. However, from the current situation, steel exports have been decreasing month by month since March. In the first half of the year, net exports of crude steel increased by only 1.09 million tons, only 6.8%. On the other hand, the performance of medium-thick wide steel in the first half of the year only increased by 3.7%, while the bar and steel reached 11.4% and 15.2% respectively. According to the latest monthly report of China Steel Association, as of the end of June, the domestic market high-line and rebar were 4,885 yuan and 4,937 yuan per ton respectively, up 21.43% and 24.51% respectively, while the plate and hot-rolled coils were respectively per ton. It was 4,928 yuan and 4,908 yuan, up only 13.94% and 13.27% year-on-year. In the case of a sharp rise in the price of raw fuel, the price of plate and hot-rolled coils has not only increased slightly, but even lower than the price of rebar in the same period. In addition, Zhu Jimin pointed out that steel companies will face greater financial pressure in the second half of the year. As CPI and PPI rose by 6.4% and 7.1% respectively in June, it will likely tighten monetary policy and increase corporate financial pressure. According to the statistics of China Steel Association, the financial expenses of large and medium-sized iron and steel enterprises in the first half of the year increased by 33.79% year-on-year; if the liquidity of the market in the later period is further weakened, the situation faced by enterprises is even more severe. Production costs are also further constraining the development of enterprises. According to the statistics of the General Administration of Customs, the average landed price of imported iron ore in the first half of the year was 160.89 US dollars per ton, a record high, with a year-on-year increase of 42.41%. In the first half of the year, the import of iron ore was 33.425 million tons, an increase of 25.18 million tons year-on-year. As a result, foreign exchange expenditure was 16.0612 billion US dollars, increasing the cost of the steel industry by 104.11 billion yuan. In the same period, factors such as coal and electricity also have an impact on steel production. In order to alleviate the power shortage, the state has raised the price of electricity sales in 15 provinces (municipalities) such as Shanxi, and will introduce new pricing mechanisms for refined oil products in the future, as well as price reform measures for resource products such as ladder prices, and natural gas prices. Will be raised. Therefore, the trend of high cost of steel production is difficult to change in the short term.
