Researchers Successfully Recover Carbon Fibers Using Alcohol-Containing Solvents

Carbon fiber materials have obvious advantages in the automotive industry due to their light weight and high strength. However, carbon fiber is still a very expensive material, and its production process is rather complicated, resulting in insufficient production. Since carbon fiber matrix epoxy is difficult to dissolve, its recycling has also been a major problem. Fortunately, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have succeeded in finding a way to recover carbon fiber.

The traditional way of making carbon fiber is to manually lay multi-layered carbon fiber sheets in a mold and then use resin to cure the material inside the mold. After the finished carbon fiber is finished, it will be polished to make it smoother and brighter.

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology dipped carbon fiber in a solvent containing alcohol to dissolve the epoxy resin in the carbon fiber. In this way, the separated fibers and epoxy can be reused.

However, the researchers said that this recycling method is not applicable to all types of carbon fiber materials, this technology is only applicable to the use of vitrimer epoxy resin as a carbon fiber matrix material. Researcher Kai Yu said: "Vitrimers contain a dynamic bond that can replace the structure under certain conditions without compromising the integrity of the crosslinked network. We have enabled the small molecule compound ethanol to participate in the alternative reaction of the network structure and can effectively Dissolve vitrimer."
