Scientists Make Mini Sun: Providing Endless Energy for Humanity

Engineers and scientists from seven entities are building a giant "mini-star" that will provide energy to the world through the same nuclear reaction process as the sun.

This project is called Iter (which is short for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) and it is located near Aix-en-Provence in the south of France. The weight of the building will be three times that of the Eiffel Tower, and it will be as big as 60 football fields.

Inside this new building there will be a nuclear reactor, and scientists hope that it will be able to provide us with energy through nuclear aggregation. It produces clean, safe energy and reduces our dependence on fossil fuels.

Earlier this year, the team behind the project identified a new leader, Bernard Bigot. When he joined the team, he said: “We are now preparing for the project for manufacturing and construction. I have joined a new management team that not only conducts research but also industrial production.”

Inside this building will be built a small controlled nuclear reactor, which is the same with the nuclear fusion reaction inside the Sun. When two atoms collide with each other, they release energy in the form of photons. Scientists hope to harvest and use this energy to replace the severe and limited form of energy that we are currently using.

The initial phase of the project was launched in 1987 and a team of researchers from seven entities is now promoting the project, including the European Union, the United States, Russia, and China. Since the launch of this project, various problems have been encountered and the plan has been delayed. But scientists hope that the building will be able to operate in the early twentieth century and begin harvesting energy at some point in the future.

Iter means “method” in Latin. The project is named after it to emphasize a possible way to create safe and clean energy for the world. This project was once known as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, but its potentially worrying meaning makes people give up the name.
