HC Plastics News: As a newcomer to the 3D printing world of fashion, Houston-based designer Mora-Sanchez and CosineAdditive have launched a new fashion show. Her scalable 3D printed dress looms have already waved in the textile manufacturing industry and recently won the coveted James Dyson Award and Red Dot Award for Mora-Sanchez.

“I believe 3D printing is the future of fashion,” Mora-Sanchez said. “With the current development, we will create more amazing new products and materials.” But the industry is lagging behind, and 3D printing is mainly used for accessories and conceptual sculptures. Mora-Sanchez explained. “Although this dress is fascinating, it is not a functional garment and cannot be moved and worn comfortably.”

The design process has been hit by many unorthodox thinking. Mora-Sanchez explained that although her initial manufacturing method was selective laser sintering (SLS) printing, fuse length manufacturing (FFF) proved to be the best way.

Similarly, Mora-Sanchez tested several different materials to see how they work. Finally, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) materials were chosen. According to Houston designers, this special plastic has high wear resistance, low temperature resistance, high elasticity and high strength, as well as additional advantages of oil and grease resistance.
