Japan studies new technologies for artificial photosynthesis

Researchers from Japan’s Matsushita Corporation have said that they have developed artificial photosynthesis technologies that use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make oxygen and organic matter. This technology has increased the conversion efficiency of sunlight to 0.2% and has reached the level of general plants.

Japanese researchers first used a wire to connect a nitride semiconductor and a metal catalyst, and then irradiated light to a nitride semiconductor in water. The water was decomposed into oxygen and hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ions moved to the electrode of the metal catalyst and reacted with carbon dioxide. Produces organic formic acid.

Researchers at Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. for the first time successfully achieved artificial photosynthesis last year, but the energy conversion efficiency was only 0.04%. This time, Panasonic researchers adjusted the nitride semiconductor's electronic state and efficiently absorbed light energy to promote the reaction. It was the first time in the world that it had successfully achieved the same 0.2% conversion efficiency as the plant.

Researchers are prepared to further improve the efficiency of energy conversion and strive for the practical application of this technology as soon as possible.

Clawfoot Bathtub

The clawfoot tub or claw-foot tub was considered a luxury item in the late 19th century, originally made from cast iron and lined with porcelain. Modern technology has contributed to a drop in the price of clawfoot tubs, which may now be made of fiberglass, acrylic or other modern materials. Clawfoot bathtubs usually require more water than a standard bathtub, because generally they are larger. While true antique clawfoot tubs are still considered collectible items, new reproduction clawfoot tubs are chosen by remodellers and new home builders and much like the Western-style bathtubs, clawfoot tubs can also include a variety of shower head options.

Clawfoot bathtub come in 4 major styles:

  • Classic roll rim tubs, also called roll top tubs or flat rim tubs as seen in the picture at the top of this page.
  • Slipper tubs â€“ where one end is raised and sloped creating a more comfortable lounging position.
  • Double slipper tubs â€“ where both ends are raised and sloped.
  • Double ended tubs â€“ where both ends of the tub are rounded, as opposed to the classic roll tim tub, which has one rounded end and one fairly flat end.
