Experts advise: Insulating glass does not mean "double glass"

With the continuous promotion and improvement of residential energy-saving standards, insulating glass is entering millions of households. Connoisseurs remind you: Do not mistake hollow glass for “double glass”!

Filled with inert gas argon and helium

According to the connoisseurs of the design and construction of energy-saving houses, in terms of a window, the loss of heat energy in the house is mainly caused by the transmission of window frames, the radiation of glass, the cracking of windows and frames, and so on. As a result, “insulating glass” came into being.

In fact, "insulating glass" is not "empty." According to the technical requirements, the distance between the two layers of the insulating glass is generally 8mm. Tests have shown that if the 8mm spacing is completely vacuum, the atmospheric pressure will crush the glass. Therefore, the qualified hollow glass must be filled with an inert gas such as argon and helium in an interlayer of 8 mm thick. After filling, the test shows that its K value (the limit value of heat transfer coefficient), compared with the vacuum state, can also be reduced by 5%, which means better insulation performance.

The market is flooded with double glass

In other words, if the hollow glass you purchase is really “empty” in the interlayer, it means that the insulation or insulation performance of the glass is equivalent to double glass, and the effect of thermal insulation and energy saving is inevitably poor. Most of the hollow glass in the market is simply fixed with two pieces of glass together, and its thermal insulation performance is undoubtedly the “deception of savage heads”.

Aluminum bars with holes in the glass

The “double glazing” with poor heat insulation performance often causes haze in the interlayer due to the entry of air-moisture, and even mold spots. Some companies have inserted aluminum strips with holes in between two pieces of glass. The granular desiccant is placed in the pores of the bar. This "processing" method only serves to temporarily hide the ear, does not improve the thermal insulation properties of the double glazing, and after a long time the desiccant fails, it will still reveal the filling.

One of the tricks of “examining the right person” is to see if there is ice between the glass in winter and there is no water vapor in spring and summer. Of course, there are mostly false vacuums embedded in aluminum bars. The material of the window frame is also a sign. Hollow glass is generally made of plastic steel instead of aluminum alloy frame.
