Japan Zeon launches single-walled carbon nanotubes and also provides rubber composites

Zeon exhibited actual supply in January 2016 at "International Nanotechnology Exhibition and Technology Conference (nano tech 2016, January 27-29, 2016 at Tokyo International Exhibition Center)" Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SCNT, trade name "ZEONANO SG101").

Of particular interest in the exhibits is a composite material in which rubber is mixed with SCNT. The company had publicized that this composite material can exert unprecedented high conductivity.

The SCNT exhibited by the company is a carbon tube composed of a single-layered carbon atom "net" composed of six-carbon rings called Dream New Material (Fig. 1). The Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute, which has developed an efficient SCNT manufacturing method, stated that "this is a fantastic new material that has 20 times the strength of steel, 10 times the thermal conductivity of copper, half the density of aluminum, and 10 times the electron mobility of silicon." . But this is the value of the SCNT hexagonal-bonded carbon atom network with almost no defects such as breaks. This high performance is theoretically inferred. The industry generally believes that in order to reduce defects and produce them at low cost, It is more difficult than expected.

Rayon started production of this SCNT from mid-November 2015. At the press conference on November 4th, he said, “On November 11th, the completion ceremony of the SCNT manufacturing facility will be held at the company's Tokuyama factory and production will start.” At the time, he said, "We must first ensure a certain amount of inventory and guarantee quality, so we will actually begin shipping from January 2016." The production scale has not been announced and the price will be controlled at "2 million yen/1kg or so."

Manufacturing will use SGCNTs manufactured on the basis of the high-throughput mass production method "ultra growth method" discovered by the Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute in November 2004. If a certain amount of production can be ensured and the manufacturing plant can enter a stable production state, the quality will be stable and the quality can be guaranteed. Therefore, ensuring that the first SCNT users are the key.

The key to composite technology is masterbatch

The breakthrough of its use is a wide range of rubber composite materials. The key to the realization of rubber composite materials is "masterbatch", which is an intermediate material that can disperse SCNTs uniformly in rubber. Arakawa Fair, president of the company’s subsidiary Zeon Nano Technology (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), who is responsible for SCNT’s sales and technical operations, “will also provide masterbatches”.

Zeon also developed a dispersion technology for making composite materials of SCNT and other materials. The catalog parameter of the company SCNT is an average diameter of 3 to 5 nm, and the length of the "SCNT aggregate" that is in the longitudinal direction is 300 to 500 μm. Due to the slenderness of SCNTs, it is technically difficult to produce composite materials by uniformly dispersing SCNTs in the matrix of metals such as rubber, plastics, aluminum, and copper. The decentralized technology has been developed in cooperation with a single-layer CNT Fusion Technology Development Agency (TASC). TASC was established in May 2010, in addition to the company, there are user companies to join. Decentralized technology related patents and experience are held and managed by this technology combination.

Zion is a large company in the field of special rubber. As a use of SCNT, it is intended to first introduce rubber composites. At nanotech 2016, the company announced the performance of a composite of SCNT mixed in rubber at 5 phr (5 parts SCNT mixed in 100 parts by weight of rubber, approximately 4% by weight). The comparison object is carbon black (CB) fine carbon particles. It is said that the tensile strength of the composite material containing SCNT dispersed at 150° C. is increased to 13 to 14 trillion Pa, which is about 2 times higher than that of carbon black. (figure 2). "The fatigue strength at a fixed load at 120°C is also increased to about 2 times." This performance is a result of the dispersion of SCNT, and the performance is greatly improved compared to simple mixing.

General Safety Information:

Using methods

4. After power, wait for 5-10 minutes to allow glue to soften
