[China Aluminum Network] In order to reduce the entire construction cost, the Future Aircraft Projects Office (PMS378) supports the use of aluminum heat welding for the connection of multi-cables and copper conductors of naval marine power equipment. Since the aluminothermic welding process will be used to connect the EMALS marine power cables, General Aero (GA), the manufacturer of the aircraft carrier electromagnetic ejector system (EMALS), has designated ERICO Products' CADWELD® Exolon system. GA also specifies 3M's products for isolating these power cables. A project team at the Naval Metal Processing Center evaluated the overall quality and performance of multi-cable and copper wire connectors manufactured using the CADWELD® Exolon system process. In addition, verification tests of the recommended 3M insulation products for these power cables were also conducted.
Project achievements:
The CADWELD Exolon aluminum heat welding process is very stable. When the joint is manufactured, its overall performance and quality are not affected by environmental conditions. In addition, when isolated with the recommended 3M insulation product, the joint insulation is not affected by the environment. The test project has confirmed that the joints are manufactured using advanced installation processes and their electrical and mechanical properties meet the requirements of the EMALS power cable on the CVN78.
