Due to the severe friction, the temperature in the grinding zone is high. This will cause the workpiece to produce stress and deformation, and even cause the surface of the workpiece to burn. Therefore, a large amount of coolant must be injected during grinding to reduce the grinding temperature. The coolant can also function as a chip and a lubricant.

The radial force during grinding is large. This will cause the elastic retraction of the machine-grinding wheel-workpiece system so that the actual depth of cut is smaller than the nominal depth of cut. Therefore, when grinding is about to be completed, light milling should not be performed in order to eliminate errors.

After the abrasive grain is blunt, the grinding force also increases, causing the abrasive grain to break or fall off, re-exposing a sharp edge, this feature is called "self-sharpening". Self-sharpening enables grinding to proceed normally for a certain period of time. However, after a certain working time, manual dressing should be performed to prevent vibration, noise, and damage to the surface quality of the workpiece due to increased grinding force.

Because the grinding wheel itself has high hardness and heat resistance, grinding can process high hardness materials such as hardened steel and hard alloy.
