The researchers of the China University of Science and Technology discovered the phenomenon of nonlinear electron scattering for the first time

The reporter learned from the University of Science and Technology of China that Professor Chen Xiangjun of the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Hefei Microscale cooperated with Prof. Luo Yi to discover the phenomenon of nonlinear electron scattering for the first time using a self-developed scanning probe electronic energy spectrometer. The discovery has the potential to develop a revolutionary surface single-molecule detection technique. The research results are published in the latest issue of Nature Physics.

Electron energy loss spectroscopy is an important means of analyzing the chemical composition of materials. When electrons hit the sample, they lose energy and undergo inelastic scattering. The energy of electron loss depends on the state of the sample atoms and their state, and the inelasticity is measured through collection. By scattering electrons, information such as elemental distribution and atomic interactions in the sample can be obtained. However, in conventional electron scattering, non-elastic electrons account for only a very small proportion, and most electrons are elastically scattered electrons without energy loss.

Their experiments show that localized plasmon fields excited by electrons on silver nanostructures (fields formed by the collective movement of electrons in the sample) can lead to nonlinear electron scattering phenomena, and more electrons lose energy, making them non- The strength of elastic electrons is significantly enhanced. Professor Luo Yi proposed a theoretical model for a single-electron two-step process and explained this nonlinear electron scattering.

Non-linear electron scattering is not only a completely new physical phenomenon, but it also brings a new and promising spectroscopy technology, “non-linear electron scattering spectroscopy”, which can be used in the future to study adsorption on metal nanometers. A single atom or molecule on a particle. Phys.org, a well-known British science and technology news website, and the Asian Scientists magazine made special reports on the research results.

For a long time, Chen Xiangjun’s research group has been using its own experimental device to develop the structure and dynamics of collisions between electrons and atoms and molecules. It is one of the internationally renowned research groups in this field. Ten years ago, they began to try to innovatively combine electron spectroscopy with solid surface scanning probe technology to develop a scanning probe electron spectrometer.
