This is because they keep secreting a kind of lubricating mucus, so that the dirt cannot adhere to it. Now, some scientists have used this feature of earthworms to create a new material that will find many uses.
A research team from the Leibniz Institute of New Materials in Germany has developed a rubber polymer with tiny holes on the surface and containing silicone oil droplets.
Normally, silicone oil stays inside the polymer. But when pressure is applied to it, the droplets will change shape and they will seep from the small holes to the surface of the material. After that, they form a lubricating layer. When friction occurs with the surrounding environment, this lubricating layer will be continuously replenished with silicone oil.
Interestingly, the surface of the polymer is not smooth but rough, which can actually increase the lubrication, because it can make the oil better adhere to the polymer surface. After a comparison test between the polymer with a smooth surface and the polymer with a rough surface, it is found that the oil bun on the rough surface can maintain about 10,000 frictions, while the smooth one can only maintain 3,000 times.
It is conceivable that this material can be used when any object needs to slide over or pass through a solid structure. In addition, it may have biomedical uses, because the microorganisms growing on its surface will continue to fall off.
