Minister of Commerce Chen Deming: China will maintain rare earth exports next year

On the 5th, Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming refuted some untrue reports from Western media about China's rare earth exports and said that China will maintain rare earth exports next year.

At the signing ceremony of the Sino-French economic and trade cooperation project held on the same day, Chen Deming said that the Chinese government has reorganized and closed some small rare earth mines that do not meet environmental protection requirements due to the consideration of strengthening environmental protection, and shut down some small mines. Naturally, China's rare earth production has declined, and exports have also decreased. The Chinese government's measures to strengthen environmental protection have been interpreted as "political events" after some media reports.

Chen Deming said that China has 30% of the world's rare earth resources, but it accounts for 90% of the global rare earth production. Some countries have rich rare earth minerals, but they are not developed, but imported from China. He said that China is currently negotiating with rare earth consumer countries and storage countries, hoping to find a suitable solution to solve the problem of increasing supply and demand of rare earths. As a mineral resource, rare earths are non-renewable and global reserves are limited. China hopes to find a way to replace rare earths or resources in the future.

Rare earth is a general term for a class of metals with less reserves, including 17 chemical elements. It is known as “industrial vitamins” and can greatly improve the performance of related materials. It is an indispensable component of modern high-tech products. With the rapid development of high-tech industries in recent years, the global demand for and consumption of rare earths has grown rapidly. Recently, some European and American media have speculated that China has substantially reduced the export quota of rare earths, and then accused China of the rare earth policy.

In order to prevent the excessive exploitation of this non-renewable resource and the serious damage to the environment caused by indiscriminate exploitation, China has strengthened the rectification and treatment of the rare earth mining industry in recent years. On October 6 this year, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said in a speech at the 6th China-EU Business Summit in Brussels that "the management and control of rare earths is necessary, but it will never be blocked. China will not use rare earth as a bargaining tool. Our aim is for the sustainable development of the world."
